Find the beat.

Tap along to estimate a track’s tempo. Use at least four steady taps, then keep tapping to refine the estimate.

—

Tap at least four beats.

Make a useful estimate

  1. Choose a clear, steady passage in the music you are hearing.
  2. Tap the button on each beat. On a keyboard, focus the button and press Space.
  3. Keep tapping for 8–16 beats. If you miss a beat, start again.
  4. If the number seems twice or half what you expected, tap a different pulse: music can support more than one counting level.

Why four taps are a start

4Taps create three intervals
500 msA half-second median interval

SnapSong worked calculation. The tool uses the median of up to 15 recent intervals. A pause longer than 3 seconds starts a fresh sequence.

What this is not

This is a manual tempo estimate, not automatic audio analysis. No microphone is used and no sound file is uploaded. A changing tempo needs a new measurement; a number does not describe a song’s mood, key or genre.
